Session 104: Diplomacy and a Giant Eagle (March 19, 2026)
Last session, our heroes continued on their separate ways after escaping from Hexicon. The just-revived Eden and Maho headed back to their Magnificent Mansion, where they encountered Mort being served a sequence of unsatisfying sandwiches by the Mansion’s imps. He seemed frustrated and despondent, but after Maho gave him one of her dad’s sandwiches he immediately snapped out of it. He cast Sending to let Heph know where they were and that they were safe.
Meanwhile, Heph was in a carriage on the way to Princess von Riess’s home in Bad Zamdorf. The Princess wanted to just get back and be done with the day. Heph received the Sending, and replied back his situation. The carriage arrived at Palace Rabenstein, where the Princess got out and had a brief discussion with waiting Central Command soldiers, seemingly convincing them to let her keep Heph under house arrest. Heph entered the royal residence and was placed in a small apartment with one window and one door down a short hallway. A soldier inspected the walls and windows, also placing protective wards against escape. Heph didn’t make much headway with the young lieutenant Anton Taussig guarding him, but did charm the personal servant Jan Löffler by offering him some of the sad desert shrimp served to him.
Maho in her bedroom Communed with Yura, asking about Wichthafen and Hooded Beth. She learned her mom was not in Wichthafen, that Sentin wasn’t working in Wichthafen, and that, indicated by a blood red glow from the moon outside her bedroom, Yura and Hooded Beth were enemies. She then wandered off to the restaurant in the back of the Mansion, where she found Mort. They shared a smoke lit by a being Mort called an “Erämaan”, from a continent west of Perrinor. They discussed Mort’s tragic Reuben past, the people he killed, how he changed his life, and how the choices Maho has made don’t have to define her forever. Maho asked if she could still go to school, and Mort said of course, he did. Maho accepted a pack and took her leave, returning to her room.
Eden went to sleep, and dreamed she was back in the Farlands, in a treehouse that she spent time in as a kid. Her mother called her in to dinner, but upon looking out no one was there. She headed back to her home through the rain and saw a figure in the distance, reaching out welcomingly. But as she traveled her chaotic magic kept firing off. The Brig appeared from the trees, slowing her further, and the figure approached, waving a wand and banishing the Brig. He lowered his hand to help Eden up, but Eden, realizing who he was, blasted him with a Fireball. Combined with poison from another chaotic burst, Sentin vanished and the rain cleared, allowing Eden to run the rest of the way home, reaching her mother and waking up crying.
- Heph wakes up in the apartment, and sets off trying to figure out
how to place a call
- Heph notices that the Lieutenant has eaten a shrimp, and acknowledges it without words, and he slumps a little
- Heph inspects the magical wards using Detect Magic, finding it to be abjuration all over and conjuration centered on the exits of the room
- There seems to be an alarm that will notify people if Heph tries to exit the room, and additionally there is a spell that will hold you in place
- Any spells that cross the boundary of the wards will likely trigger the wards
- There is also an envelope on the coffee table in the living room, which Heph opens without breaking the seal, and reads it; it essentially just says she can’t do anything to free me but to enjoy my stay
- The lieutenant seems a bit impressed, when Heph makes eye contact though he averts his eyes
- Heph thinks a bit about his options to get a message out, and ultimately decides to go into the bathroom and use the mirror to have a chat with Pheh
- Eden wakes up and rings her bell, and an imp hops into the room and
asks what she needs, to which she responds pancakes and orange juice
- Maho slams open the door as the imp goes to leave and slams the imp, and Maho says they need to leave because it was the fire alarm
- Maho had confused the bell for the fire alarm, and Eden explains it was just the bell even the night before
- Maho orders bacon as well, and the now flattened imp waddles away
- Maho glances through the window and sees a flash of silver, and tells Eden she’ll meet her down in the restaurant, and then opens the window and jumps through
- She finds a speckled white stone and picks it up, finding it to be connected in some way to Yura, and she thinks back to the conversation she had with Mort about people she had killed
- Eden follows the imp to the restaurant, and Morty is happily chowing down on an egg sandwich and has a soup next to it
- He waves and smiles and greets Eden jovially, asking her how she slept
- They have a brief chat about their adventure from the night before, and when Eden asks for a toke he pulls out a loose rolled one and gives it to her, telling her to be careful and to make sure that she only does it around people who are willing to help her work through her troubles
- She goes into the kitchen and double bags it and packs it away
- She ritual casts unseen servant and summons Jeremy and has him pick up a pan and help the imps cook up breakfast, and then heads back to the main room
- Maho is scarfing down bacon while asking the question of what they should do
- She asks Morty to give Heph a call, which he agrees to do, and Morty sends “Hey Heph, where are you and where do you want to meet?”
- Heph responds “Confined in Palace Rabenstein, will meet at the
Mansion if I can get out. Don’t message again, it sets off alarms.”
- A bunch of soldiers run in with spears drawn, and Heph holds his hands up
- They ask if Heph tried to escape, and Heph responds that he did nothing and the Lieutenant was watching him the whole time
- The soldier who set the traps goes around and checks all the traps, and stops at the wall, staring at it for a bit curiously, and then turns around, says everything is in place and nothing has been tampered with
- The Captain tells her to see to it nothing like this happens again, seeming to vaguely threaten her if she fails him again
- He looks at Heph and checks again that Heph did nothing, and Heph seems to convince him that he did nothing
- He tells the Lieutenant to keep a close eye on Heph’s mouth and hands since Heph is a magic user, and leaves the room
- Upon receiving the message relayed by Morty,
Eden does a spit take, and an imp runs up and hands her another
glass
- She says they need to go find Heph right away, and Maho responds that he said to meet at the mansion
- Eden tries to convince Maho they need to help, but Maho is convinced that they should sit tight since Heph didn’t ask for help
- Maho grabs a paper and writes a note to Heph saying they’ve gone to look at the Palace in case he makes it there before them
- As they get ready to head out, Morty says he is going to go deal with the situation in Ivalgo, and asks Eden and Maho if they need anything else
- Eden asks if he can give them any effect to help, and as he goes through what he can do, Maho realizes he could ask Yura where Mona went, and he blushes the color of roast beef at that
- He stammers a bit at that, seeming to imply he has no reason to find her since he isn’t hungry
- Eden gives Morty the clothing she borrowed from Spraus to return, and tells Maho they should probably get going
- Morty explains how it going to turn back the fleet, saying he doesn’t have much to help, and gives a pack of smokes to Eden to practice with, and then claps his hands and teleports away
- Eden and Maho head off towards the palace
- Back in the apartment, Heph inspects the spot on the wall the
soldier inspected, and finds nothing interesting there either
- Heph heads to the bathroom to talk to Pheh, and the Lieutenant asks if it’s 1 or 2, and when Heph responds 2 he gives him 7 minutes, and Heph sells the effect by making illusory fart noises that are a bit louder and wetter than he intended
- Heph has a chat with Pheh in the mirror, ultimately deciding to pass the stones through the mirror to each other, ultimately deciding to use each other’s sending stones to send the message
- Heph sends “Heph here, need that favor. Imprisoned in Bad Zamdorf. Can you arrange diplomatic immunity? The princess knows me as Tomb Party King and can help.” to the governor, and gets a slightly staticky message back, almost like the connection isn’t great, saying “Goddamn. I owe you a favor, not least because of what you did yesterday. I have some political cache with the Bismarck Empire, I’ll try.”
- Heph heads back to the mirror and gets his stone back, and we have a brief chat, Heph expressing that it’s a good thing that they stayed diverged and are working together
- Both Heph and Pheh are quite excited to work together to do more research once they have dealt with Sentin
- Heph heads back out and the Lieutenant notes that it didn’t sound fun, and Heph responds that he had way too much shrimp, which seems to make the Lieutenant a little nervous because he ate a shrimp
- As they walk to the palace, Eden asks Maho if she’s
worried at all
- Maho says he’s smart and he’s gotten himself out of many issues, and she usually follows his plans to help him out of any situations
- Eden wants to get close to Heph so they can insert themselves into whatever plan Heph has, and Maho responds she’d like to hear it
- Eden asks Maho if she remembers inexplicably being a sheep, and she explain that she wants to turn Maho into a creature that can carry Eden and bring her to Heph and then carry both of them out
- After some more discussion, Eden finally convinces Maho to trust her, and Eden Polymorphs Maho into a giant eagle
- As they fly up they look to the side, and there are 4 armored soldiers staring at them in shock as the Polymorph happens, and they slowly raise their spears
- Maho takes off, doing an eagle screech and picking Eden up by the neck
- Eden notices 3 of the guards raising their heavy crossbows to take
shots, and one seeming to get ready to run off and call it in
- Eden asks Maho if she thinks they should engage or not, and Maho responds that she wants to try flying, but it comes out in giant eagle and Eden can’t understand
- Eden climbs out of Maho’s claws and onto her back, and prepares to try to body block some shots so Maho doesn’t go down
- Maho flies away, getting about 160ft of distance between them and the guards
- One guard runs off to sound the alarm, and the other 3 guards take shots
- The first one misses both shots
- The second one lands one shot, which Eden dives in the way of and takes a chunk of damage from
- The third one misses both shots
- Flying around as a giant eagle, they are very visible, and the Central Command
guards seem to be tracking them without any issue, and they spot a contingent
of 5 guards on a rooftop in their path with crossbows
- Eden gets herself ready to body block a shot if needed
- Maho flies to keep them out of range
- The guards shoot, landing one shot on Maho, almost taking her out in one shot
- Another shot is on target, and Eden bends luck and a gust of wind slightly blows the bolt off course
- Somehow no other bolts fly true, and Eden and Maho barely scrape through that
- Meanwhile, Heph is having a lovely tea with Jan while waiting for the gears of diplomacy to turn, having a glass for the Lieutenant as well although he isn’t partaking
- As Maho flies overhead she manages to get the guards to lose her in
the sun, and for the moment they seem to be able to continue onward without
incident
- Maho spots Karrl on a rooftop a few blocks (about 900 feet) from the palace, but Karrl isn’t able to tell the giant eagle is Maho and doesn’t spot Eden on her back
- Maho dives at Karrl, and Eden prepares to message Karrl when they get within range
- Karrl takes off and starts to fly away towards the palace, but as they get into range, Eden messages Karrl saying “Mr. Karrl this is Eden I’m on the eagle’s back, everything is fine”
- He doesn’t understand though and continues to fly, and Eden yells at Maho that she is scaring Karrl
- Eden pulls out her owl and has it fly alongside them for the moment
- After Maho casts her shadow on Karrl she breaks off to the West, and Eden directs her owl to follow Karrl and report back to Eden if it finds Heph
- As Karrl gets back in range, Heph sees that the danger has passed, and calms Karrl down and gets him to go perch
- Heph spots the owl that Karrl had alerted him to, and notices that it is Eden’s
- Eden’s owl flies back to her and relays the information about
Heph’s location
- Eden asks Maho if they should take action, and Maho shakes her head
- Eden suggests they find a safe place for Maho to roost, and take it from there
- Eden and Maho hide on a rooftop behind a tall building, and Eden tries to make some sparks on the building such that Heph might be able to spot it
- Heph doesn’t see it but the guards do, and the conjurer casts fly on herself and flies upwards to look in Eden’s direction
- As she flies up Heph messages “Is something happening out there?”
- As that happens, Governor Literi rides up to the palace
on a horse
- The guards stand at attention, and seeing him in the clothing of the Saraian Empire they wait, and a messenger that was with him unrolls a scroll and reads it out loud
- The conjurer looks down and seems a bit disappointed, and the soldiers look up to her for guidance
- She takes a deep breath and nods, and one of the soldiers runs into the palace
- A couple of minutes later the Captain comes out with the soldier and has a back and forth with the Governor
- Eventually the Captain nods, goes back into the palace, and then the apartment door opens
- Lieutenant Anton stands at attention as the Captain walks down the hall, and the Captains says with a sour expression “You are free to go, you are to leave the Bismarck Empire with all due haste. If you are still within the borders of the Empire by midday tomorrow, you will once again be under arrest. You are to immediately make all haste to exit, no loitering or sitting about. Do you understand?”
- Heph replies that he does, tips Jan 10gp, and Jan asks if he can do anything else, and offers to get Heph’s stuff back, and Heph just asks for only his stuff
- Jan comes back with Heph’s stuff, including Jarles, and finds that Jan has slipped some shrimp in there as well
- On the way out, Heph nods and winks at the Lieutenant, who begrudgingly gives him a slight nod back
- Jan tells Heph that if he is ever back in the area he would be happy to be of help
- The guards escort Heph out and stand back to let him get going, and Ginevra flying overhead scowls and glares a bit, and flies off towards the sparks she saw
- The governor is standing there waiting for Heph, and he nods at Heph and motions to his horse, indicating Heph should hop on
