Session 90: Hexicon and Harengon (September 11, 2025)
Last session, our heroes gazed into the Widow Seer’s crystal, gaining a vision of Mana, Maho’s mom. She was sneaking into some kind of large building in an unknown Bismarck Empire city (to clarify from the history roll last session, the architecture does not seem the most outdated, and you know Wichthafen has been abandoned for a couple hundred years at least). She crept through over-lit corridors until she reached a curtained-off, pitch black hallway. At the end of it was some kind of open chamber, difficult to make out in the dark. Although at least a dozen white, porcelain faces could be made out below, attached to nominally humanoid bodies. One of the faces looked directly at the party, and Mana gripped her sword, ducked back into the hallway, and the connection broke.
The party discussed theories about what Mana had found, and how these creatures, reminiscent of hauntings in Wichthafen, ended up in a Central Command building wearing Lucien Blinds. Elias then dropped that he and Ash had been talking, and he needs to go back to the Nor’Southern Isles and handle the situation post-Kogar. They cooked up a plan for Elias to disguise himself as Kogar with the help of Ana’s final lesson, and Elias passed off his items, including officially giving Jarles to Heph and the Amulet of Wind to Maho.
Darryl offered to help fare everyone’s way home, Elias and Ash through Ivalgo with a hope of potentially finding Mort and doing something about the invasion fleet. And so, Elias headed off with Ash, ready to run towards his new life.
- As the party wraps up, we say our goodbyes to family and friends, and plan our
next move, still a bit in shock from Elias’ departure
- The Princess comes up to us and gives us 15k gp to give to Ash and Elias, and gives Maho and Heph each 10k gp as a thank you for delivering it for her
- Heph and Maho head off to Hexicon, with the plan for Heph to go speak to Sentin alone
- On the way back into town, Heph looks at the schedule, and suggests Maho might want to check out the Open Mystery Bar
- Arriving at the convention center, there is a still a lot of activity
- There is a group of protesters gathered outside the building as we approach
- There are 6 or 7ish human-looking figures carrying picket signs, seeming to protest that magic is not for mere mortals
- Heph points at the human woman in the middle with the “Who’s really doing the casting?” sign and Messages “Definitely me”
- She clocks him and uses Thaumaturgy to yell at Heph and say “How dare you cast magic at me!”
- After a brief exchange Heph walks off, and as he does uses Prestidigitation to turn the “Who” on the sign into an “I” (becoming “I’s really doing the casting?”, and the woman doesn’t notice
- Maho continues to talk to the woman, who explains that Sarnann
blessed her to cast magic
- Maho responds that she feels like you can only really rely on weapons, but she’s asks the woman what she is really trying to accomplish
- The woman seems to want only Sarnann’s magic to be used and all other magic to be abandoned
- Mindprison seems to be taking it all in, standing with her fingers steepled, trying to contain herself to not get in trouble
- In response to the raised voices, some Central Command acting as security wander over, and the woman attempts to charm them, and only manages to charm the one who isn’t immediately approaching
- The one in the back wants the woman to speak louder, and the one who approached turns back and they start fighting
- The woman takes the opportunity to dump some water on Maho’s head and then takes her party away to protest somewhere else
- Maho looks at the sky wondering where the water comes from and thinks “I wonder if they sell umbrellas here”
- Heph finds the convention center to be decently crowded, with large
spaces and some smaller spaces off to the side, and he heads directly towards
Artificer’s Alley
- He arrives at an open room labeled Artificer’s Alley, and it is a big open room with a bunch of stalls set up, but it is late and many people are packing up for the day
- As Heph walks in, he sees an individual standing off to the side trying to catch the eye of people walking in, and Heph looks over doing a double take
- Heph hears a voice in his head saying “Hey Kid, you interested in some magic items?”
- Heph ignores the dude and keeps walking, looking for Sentin’s booth
- He is very short and can’t quite see over the tall tables and booths, but he does spot a couple of teenagers with volunteer badges (Kelvrina and Nelvrin)
- Heph wanders up to the teenagers volunteering, using the Utility Seat Belt to make himself some steps, and says “excuse me”
- One of the volunteers runs over, looking a bit flustered, and tries to answer, but the girl runs over and demands he gets back to cleaning up, even though she isn’t helping at all
- She wants to leave because her boyfriend is waiting, and Nelvrin reminds her that the customers come first, and starts looking up where the Lucien Dynastic table is, and the girl says “another Lucien-head? He’s over there”
- Heph turns to leave, distracting her with sparkles and using his Mage Hand to grab her sending device
- She grabs a greataxe from under the counter and starts to chase after Heph, but Heph hops up in the air and starts to fly away, managing to get a bit of space from her
- He looks at the device as he moves away, noting that it seems like a sending stone with runes on it, then pockets it
- Heph finally arrives at Lucien Dynastic’s
table, which is larger than the other tables nearby, and finds the table
packed up
- The Parchment Store, the table next door to Lucien Dynastic, is almost packed up, and the person is finishing packing it up
- Heph gets the attention of Ron Parchment and asks him if he knows when Lucien Dynastic packed up, and Ron responds that they packed up right at 7:30, but Sentin may have gone off to some unofficial meetups
- Heph has a brief interaction with Ron, who suggests Heph should come back, and Heph heads off to find Sentin
- Meanwhile, Maho heads off to the Open Mystery Bar with Mindprison,
and finds a darkly lit room with a number of tables spread out with stools
around them, and a bar at the back, looking like a fairly normal tavern
- The bartender is making drinks that are very varied and odd, some are smoking, some are weirdly still, etc.
- Every time someone drinks a drink, something weird happens, like some people seem to become hyperaware, some people’s discussion partners run away, someone runs screaming from a bathroom in the hall, one person takes a shot and then grows a few inches
- Maho turns to Mindprison and jokingly asks if this is Sarnann sanctioned, and Mindprison responds this is “her sanctioned”
- She has never had alcohol and doesn’t know what it will do, and Maho is really excited to find out
- Maho asks the bartender who’s casting the magic, and the bartender responds he is, and asks what they want, and when Maho asks for the usual he jokingly responds that she’s in the wrong place and then makes her a drink
- Maho feels that the drink seems extremely cold and is a slightly clear bubbly liquid, with frost forming on the outside of the glass
- The bartender asks for 1gp, and Maho drinks it, and it feels like she was thrown into the ocean of Bolszcz
- Mindprison tries to order the same thing, but that’s not how it works, and Mindprison gets some completely different, and after drinking it it seems nothing happens, until she burps and fire bursts out of her mouth
- She asks if it’s normal, and Maho responds sort of, but this is really fun
- Maho looks around and notices a brightly colored goblin walk in, which distracts Maho and she doesn’t notice Magdalene Stanger
- The goblin walks up to the bar and sits next to Maho, ordering 3 drinks, and the bartender gives him 48, 42, and 57
- The goblin puts the small glass inside the pineapple and then downs the pineapple, following it up with a quick snort of the drop from the petri dish
- The pineapple shrinks to a tiny size, and the goblin sees some floaters in front of his eyes that he feels a need to chase
- Maho asks him if that’s how you’re supposed to do it, and the goblin just responds “man, I’m so fucked up right now”
- Maho decides to try that, and combines Mindprison’s and hers and takes a drink
- The two drinks seem to cancel each other out in a way, and leave a very smooth pleasant drink, and Maho feels steam escape from her mouth and feels an interesting mix of warmth in her core and cold in her extremities
- She passes the drink to Mindprison saying “damn that’s how it’s done” and Mindprison downs the concoction
- Her eyes immediately go bright blue, turns away from the bar, and ice vision shoots out of her eyes and flames shoot out of her mouth
- At this point Maho notices Magdalene as she gets blasted a bit by
the ice vision/fire breath and jumps back
- She notices Maho and looks a bit scared and worried, and Maho calls her “The Doc” and asks if she should be in the basement
- She seems very nervous and pretends she is “Botany Johnson”, Maho goes along with that and asks her again if she should be in her basement
- She seems to be trying to hide who she is, and when Maho asks if TK knows she is there, she pushes the goblin off his seat and tries to get Maho to hide that she’s there
- Maho reveals she doesn’t work for TK anymore, but it does seem bold that Magdalene is out here by herself
- Maho asks her what she is doing here, and she explains that she doesn’t get a lot of freedom to explore her interests, she is paid to spend her time and energy making things for TK
- Arcane gardening is her hobby, and she is trying to get out there
- She was worried Maho was there to bring her in, but Maho doesn’t seem to care very much that she is there
- Magdalene doesn’t get to talk to other people who make cool stuff most of the time, and it’s been super cool to talk to other people who make stuff
- Maho says as long as she isn’t making drugs TK probably won’t care, but she seems to be intrigued by the idea of making drugs, and it seems Maho has convinced her to try her hand a growing drugs
- Maho asks about the thing she heard about TK looking into the Fey, and she very badly tries to lie and claim she doesn’t know anything about that
- Maho leans in close, putting her arm around Magdalene’s shoulder, and asks if she’s sure she doesn’t know anything about that
- Magdalene is not used to being touched and attempts to punch Maho back, but it doesn’t really land
- Maho leans into pretending to be friends, and Maho and Magdalene lean in, Mindprison and the goblin both lean in a bit too, and Magdalene starts to share a secret
- Magdalene says that once she is done there today she is going back to the
basement, TK has set her up with basements all over the
place
- She is supposed to do some blood experiments on some dead bodies that seem to be elvish in origin, presumably the bodies that The Dagger collected
- Maho asks for what purpose, and she says she is supposed to look into what magic properties the elves might have, and see if she can imbue some potions or other artifacts with this magic
- TK seems to think some of the magic might be able to be harnessed with her work, specifically any charming or mind control type magic
- She asks Maho about her job, and Maho says she’s doing the same old, just beating up people
- Maho asks if she would need more blood if she finds something, but Magdalene doesn’t really know until she starts doing some experiments
- Magdelene wants to share a drink as friends, and Maho buys a couple of drinks for Magdalene and herself, the goblin and Mindprison also buying another round
- Maho gets 13, Magdalene gets 5, the goblin gets 17, and Mindprison gets 3
- Maho tells the doc “Hey Doc, as friends, don’t tell TK this, but if you ever need to run or need protection, you can come to me.”
- She responds that she isn’t afraid of him at all and doesn’t know why she would need that, but she seems to appreciate that Maho is now her friend
- She also says Maho can come to her if she needs anything as well
- Heph is heading through the hallways to the Western wing of the
conference room, and he finds a room that Sentin is
in, having a conversation with a couple of people Heph doesn’t know
- Heph stands across the hall, patiently waiting for his turn to talk to Sentin
- Sentin notices Heph and finishes up his conversation with the other people, and then motions for Heph to come into the room
- He notes Heph is alone, and Heph responds that his companions have been abandoning him, but is maybe not that convincing
- He asks Heph if he is seeking out Sentin to find an alternative path, and Heph responds that he felt it was prudent to see what Sentin had to say
- Sentin pulls out some contracts, explaining that he thinks Heph has a lot to offer and can do a lot more than he has been doing
- He reveals that he feels he could be a mentor to Heph to help Heph reach his full potential, and Heph could learn a lot by coming to work for him
- Heph says he needs to think through his next move, he needs to decide on the path he is going to take on his own
- Sentin finishes the conversation by low-key threatening Heph, saying that when the offer expires at the closing of Artificer’s Alley the next day, if Heph decides not to join Sentin, Sentin will choose to ensure that the consequences of Heph’s actions catch up with
- Sentin also reveals he has an offer for Heph’s other friends
- Heph attempts to go invisible, turning another random person invisible to create a commotion, and follow Sentin, but Sentin manages to notice that Heph is following him, and Heph message “Sorry, idle curiosity” and Sentin replies “I can understand that, but please allow me my privacy”, and Heph leaves him alone
- Heph heads to the Open Mystery Bar, and spots Maho with
the group she’s with
- Maho asks the goblin (Sweet Swizz) where he’s been, and he responds something incomprehensible, and asks if anyone wants candy, and pulls out a ton of candy
- Heph grabs a piece of candy and eats it, starting to laugh maniacally and not being able to stop, but staying invisible
- Maho thinks it’s the demon who casts, and asks Swizz if he saw the Sarnann people, and Swizz thinks they are nerds
- Maho and Swizz continue to talk, discussing Swizz’s candy that he has been selling all day
- Heph eats another candy that neutralizes all alcohol, which doesn’t do anything since Heph has not been drinking
- Swizz is periodically ordering drinks, he orders a 20 and a 19
- Maho tells Swizz about feeding the magic candy to Woahdoe Boedough, and suggests he should try it with his candy
- Heph eats another candy and can suddenly see himself, realizing that he is still invisible and can just see invisible things, and he notices nobody is possessed, but he gets a weird feeling related to someone who he knows who has been possessed in the past, and feels worried about the Harengon who they left with the Goliaths
- Swizz orders another drink (another 17), and then Heph comes out of invisibility and tells Maho they should go check on the goliaths
- As Heph, Maho and Mindprison start to walk away Swizz orders another drink and gets a 57
- As the group leaves, Maho explains what Magdalene is up to and
expresses worry that if we leave her alone too long, bad things might happen
- Heph explains the candy and the weird feeling he got about the Harengon, and the group loads up into the wagon and Woahdoe Boughdoe rushes us into the town to try to find where the goliaths have gotten to
- On the way out, Heph spots the protesters again and messes with them with some sparks, and the woman casts bath a sacred flame, dealing Heph some damage, and yelling at him from a distance to repent and turn to Sarnann
- In retaliation Maho launches a Stone Throw at the woman, poking her a bit, and she manages to stay on her feet
- As we head through the rows of buildings, we eventually come across a building that is completely upside down, and Izume and the other goliaths are on the ground underneath the building, and run up to us as we approach
- They explain that the building suddenly flipped upside down, and Heph is pretty sure the Harengon is the cause
- Heph asks the goliaths which room they had, and then proceeds to
fly into the window to try to deal with the situation, planning to throw out a
rope, but Maho just climbs up the building behind him and is inside
before he can find something to tie it off to
- The Harengon is lying on the ground, now awake, clutching her head as if she has a headache
- She looks up and says “I am so sorry”
