Session 95: Mort Might Be a God (November 13, 2025)
Last session, our heroes launched their assault on the NSI fleet outside of Ivalgo. They, along with very good pirate Captain Bartolomeo Burton, sailed to the small boat on which Elias, Ash, and crew were gathering information. Ash relayed to the party, while Elias was below decks suffering the effect of some bad scallops, that they had determined that Mort was being held prisoner on one of the ships, but that Gobus Mistwall was unfortunately not in this particular fleet. His ship was elsewhere in the Shivered Sea, further from the action. While Elias seemed fairly eager to go and kill some NSI soldiers (a fact that discomfited Eden), he was unable to join them. And so they left Fruto on the ship, took Peg-Leg Steve, and returned to their sloop.
They summoned an illusory Iron Golem borrow from Elias, and turned themselves invisible. Then upon reaching mangonel distance, they leapt into the water as their sloop was struck by a hurled projectile. Maho caught some of the splintering mast of their boat, but remained undetected as she reactivated her invisibility and the party walked across the waves towards what appeared to be the flagship.
Heph flew up and painted a small hole in the aft of the ship. It was caught by a soldier who was inside, and the party being detected attempted to pile in through the hull. A tense combat then ensued, where Heph ghosted around, mostly avoiding attacks as he scouted the ship. Maho came out of invisibility, immediately beheading a soldier and working her way down the hall, insisting you “can’t prove I did that” as a line of bodies lay behind her. And Eden, unwilling to engage in out-and-out combat, turned Maho into a sheep, then after a convincing speech from the World’s Coolest Pirate, non-lethally immolated most of the remaining enemies.
We rejoin our heroes as a fire spreads below decks. Peg-Leg Steve is unconscious, Bartolomeo Burton is injured, and an alerted admiral approaches.
- The commando remaining next to Maho (Commando Johnny Firedeath)
swings at Maho but misses, and the one on the floor with
Heph notices that he is there and heads towards him, but doesn’t
land a hit, and Johnny Firedeath burns to death in the flames
- Bartolomeo drags Peg-Leg Steve out of the fire and attempts to stabilize him, but isn’t quite able to
- Heph flies downstairs and dashes towards the back wall of the lower floor, and spies a door hidden in a little area behind the crates
- The soldiers notice the fireball, some on the deck below the fireball dash towards the stairs to head upstairs, and the couple of soldiers on the deck with Heph head towards the stairs, one noticing Heph’s noise and heads towards Heph
- Peg-Leg Steve succeeds on a death save
- The sailor next to Maho disengages and runs away
- Maho notes that the charismatic pirate finally got Eden involved, and then ducks low and runs out of the fire, catching the sailor who fled in the back and beheading him, then she steps up to the Admiral and slashes at her, activating her fire rune and trapping the Admiral in fiery chains, then swings at her twice, hitting her once but the Admiral blocks the second blow
- The Admiral stands up straight, resolving to fight, and manages to land one of
her hits, dealing some damage to Maho and poisoning her, and
escapes from the chains
- The fire spreads out a bit, and a another Soldier and Sailor come down the stairs
- Eden checks the door and realizes there is likely fire outside, but having heard Bartolomeo try to revive Peg-Leg Steve she opens the door and seeing the Captain says “Captain, I killed all those people!” and he responds, “No, you non-lethally… yeah you did, and you’ll have to live with that, but you can prevent further death, specifically me and our unconscious friend here. It’s not about what you’ve done, it’s about what you do next, although what you’ve done will come back a bit when you try to sleep”
- Eden moves out into the hallway and casts Cure Wounds on Peg-Leg Steve, giving him a rousing (literally) speech, and he sits up, surrounded by fire, and Eden apologizes profusely for it, and she asks the Captain where Maho went, and he says she was super cool and walked out of the flames, and Eden yells after Maho that it’s time to go, but Maho responds that Heph is still here so they’re not done yet
- Eden uses a sorcery point to quicken cast sorcerous burst at the Admiral, but she manages to dodge the burst, unnecessarily cutting it in half with her scimitar as she does so, and seems to look towards Eden, and Eden moves back into the room, moving towards the hole in the boat
- The commandos on Heph’s level head towards Heph, dashing towards where the soldier points him to be, and one more heads upstairs towards Maho, landing a hit on her
- Bartolomeo Burton looks back into the room with Eden, saying he has a mission to complete and he’s going to complete it, and he says to Peg-Leg Steve “it’s too big of a risk” and Steve responds “I know”, Eden seeming to recognize a shared understanding between Bartolomeo and Steve despite them not knowing each other before, and Bartolomeo dashes through the fire to aid Maho, taking a bit of damage
- Heph maneuvers over the crates and heads through the door at the back, and finds himself in a child’s playroom, and there is a young well-dressed boy playing haphazardly with a pile of blocks in the center, and as Heph enters the child looks at Heph with unintelligent animal eyes, and looking at the dolls, Heph notices one with a blue cloak with silver stars sewed into it, but no hat
- Heph closes the door behind him and Arcane Locks it, then heads towards the doll, keeping an eye on the child, whose gaze follows Heph as he walks, and Heph notes how the place feels mundane but also like a mimicry of a playroom, and Heph notices the other dolls seem like they are wearing peasant clothing from the Nor’Southern Isles, and some dolls wearing NSI garb, and Heph looks at the child and says “Hi there”, and the child slowly starts to get up and lean towards Heph
- Some soldiers come up the stairs to Maho’s deck and swing at her, landing a few hits, and one comes up to Bartolomeo but doesn’t swing at him
- Peg-Leg Steve walks back into the room, walks up to Eden and says “You need to be brave, I can be here no longer” and jumps out of the ship, Eden calling “that’s very brave of you” as he runs away
- One of the sailors swings at Bartolomeo with some daggers but he gracefully dodges both strikes
- Maho uses second wind and moves away from the fight without provoking opportunity attacks and swings at the Admiral, at a disadvantage due to poison, but manages to land a couple of hits, pushing her around and knocking her back into the fire
- The Admiral leaps out of the fire, glaring at Maho, and swings at
her, only landing one hit, but managing to charm Maho in the
process
- The Brig looks at Heph, and without moving much its eyes glint, and Heph is levitated across the room up against the rocking horse, and The Brig turns around, Heph manages to break eye contact and is no longer restrained, but takes some damage as a necrotic chill enters his body
- The door to the playroom disappears, and the fire spreads further
- Eden tries to hype herself up to be brave and quick ritual casts detect magic, detecting a touch of magic from Peg-Leg Steve, Heph’s Arcane Lock, as well as some magic that isn’t Perrinor magic, but she recognizes as Fey Bullshit™️, specifically she detects a creature that could best be described as a bogeyman, and looking out towards Steve she asks “how brave am I supposed to be?” and he responds “As brave as it takes. See ya!”, and summoning her courage, she dimension doors straight down to the level of the bogeyman, and appearing in the room with Heph, Heph says hi and warns her not to look at the child
- The Brig takes a legendary action and paralyzes Eden
- One of the commandos swings at Bartolomeo but misses
- Bartolomeo, surrounded by enemies, swings at the soldier to his right but misses
- Heph, realizing he’s not going to be able to charm the creature, lays into it with a lightning bolt, and does a little bit of damage, and then moves between Eden and The Brig, and looking at a crate of toys, sees a good variety of toys, and reaches in a grabs a little ball filled with beans
- The Brig uses a legendary action to chill Heph again, and he takes necrotic damage but resists any further effects
- 2 soldiers swing at Bartolomeo, one managing to hit but not take him down, and the last soldier chucks a spear at Maho but misses and then runs to head back upstairs
- A sailor swings at Bartolomeo, hitting him and bringing him down finally, and he looks to Maho and says “Remember… how cool I was” before falling unconscious
- Maho steps over Bartolomeo and uses the amulet of wind to make a protective wind wall, dealing a chunk of damage to all the enemies surrounding her, and then dumps a potion of greater healing down Bartolomeo’s throat, bringing him back up
- The Admiral looks at Maho and stabs at her, landing two blows for a
chunk of damage and once again poisoning Maho
- The Brig turns its attention towards Heph, and he takes some necrotic damage but avoids any other affects, and realizes that the child just wants to play and was potentially trying to turn him into a doll
- The stuffed bear in the playroom stands up and looks towards Heph, then reaches into a gash in its stuffing and pulls out a knife, and the fire spreads
- Eden is paralyzed but manages to shake herself out of it, and Heph hears a scream behind him, and Eden casts dispel magic on the Morty doll, and with Heph’s help it works, and Morty suddenly appears from the shelf and takes in the room, and immediately falls to his knees and begins throwing up, and after Heph briefly fills him in on what’s happening, he tries to get up, and Eden gives him bardic inspiration, and a Modron Duodrone appears in the room
- The Duodrone approaches the child and slashes at it, dealing a tiny bit of damage to it, and tells us that the child’s soul is pure black
- The Brig takes some legendary actions and turns towards Morty, who manages to save from the first effect, but doesn’t quite save from the second and is rendered unconscious
- The commando swings at Maho and lands one hit
- Bartolomeo, now awake, stands up with Maho and swings at the soldiers, managing to take both down and moves a step away from Maho, saying “we should maybe start thinking about an escape plan, do you know where your comrades went?”
- Heph attempts to hypnotize The Brig but isn’t able to, and instead heads across the room and shakes Morty back awake
- The Brig turns to Morty and tries to throw him across the room and turn him back into a toy, but doesn’t manage it
- The remaining sailor turns to Bartolomeo and tries to take him down, but misses both swings
- With a nat 20 luck check, Morty seems to not only have the spell slots for a teleportation, but also seems to have the ability to actually get past the Fey Bullshit, and he moves to the center of the room and readies the teleport
- Maho activates the executioner’s axe and swings at the Admiral, who manages to parry two strikes but the third hit lands and deals a good chunk of damage to her, and tries to cleave the commando but doesn’t quite manage it
- The Admiral swings back at Maho, landing two hits and again
poisoning Maho, although Maho resists the majority of
the damage
- The Brig turns its focus towards Morty, and while Morty manages to resist most of the effects he does take some damage and is frightened
- The bear walks over towards Eden, smiling creepily, and stabs at her, missing, and emits a high pitched cackle, which both Morty and Eden manage to survive
- The rocking horse in the playroom comes to life and pulls out a knife, and the fire spreads further, engulfing Patricia Drowningdeath (the Admiral) and Maho, and Particia sees respect in Maho’s eyes, and Maho sees fear and also respect in hers
- As the fire spreads, some of the floor of the deck that is on fire collapses
- Eden hops up onto the shelving unit next to her, and uses rabbit hop to jump towards Morty, who immediately triggers the teleport spell
- As the spell triggers, we push through some sort of elastic barrier and take some damage, but we see a focused and intense site of Morty that we rarely see, a brief moment of seeing the extraordinarily powerful wizard that Morty truly is, and we find ourselves on the deck of the next ship over from the one we were on
- Eden takes a moment to take in her surroundings, readying herself to take the action she has yet to use
